Pathways and Partnerships
Careers education acknowledges student dreams and aspirations while aiming to increase students’ self-awareness, understanding and confidence in planning for a positive future that includes further study and/or employment. The knowledge and understanding gained will assist students to make wise, well informed decisions, while acknowledging employability skills, their ability to improve these skills while at school and confidently articulate what they are capable of. Current research is showing that young people will experience 5-7 industries and at least 20 different employers through their years of employment. The skills developed at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College will provide students with the ability to traverse their employment years with confidence.
Pathways and Partnerships at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College is focused on providing “career” opportunities for all students across the College. Opportunities are provided in the form of presentations with Education & Industry guest speakers, excursions, programs and workshops. This encourages opportunities for career conversations with a wide range of people, and allows students to develop a mind set of lifelong learning.
Work Experience
Work experience, shadowing opportunities, volunteering and ‘a day in the life’ activities are available in Year 10, where all students are encouraged to complete at least 1 week of work experience. Practical assistance is given for employment and study related matters and may address subject selection, jobs, courses, applications, scholarships, study skills, time management and interview skills. A separate google classroom is set up for work experience and the documents required for this. Students are provided the details of the google classroom when it is time to start preparing for work experience.
