By connecting to the real world of students’ lives, authentic learning enables students to become lifelong learners who contribute to society and the wider world as active and discerning citizens. Authentic learning is central to our work as Catholic educators because it promotes the continual growth and wellbeing of the whole person — spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.
At Our Lady of Mercy Catholic College Burraneer, we have a student centred learning approach which aims to develop positive relationships and recognise and value effort in order to encourage student success.
The learning environment promotes self motivation, persistence, independence and interdependence. Teachers emphasise quality of learning through high expectations. A wide range of teaching strategies and learning experiences are used to differentiate learning and promote different ways of learning and thinking.
Students are challenged and experience opportunities to develop deep understanding, reflect on values and attitudes and build and apply skills. Interactive learning approaches are used to encourage critical thinking, creativity, reflection and problem solving. Learning is sustained and progressive over time. Learning experiences are reflective of students’ real life context to build connections.
