Commerce - Market

Market Day is always one of the highlights of the calendar, and this year’s was no exception. The Stage 5 Commerce students put together a fantastic range of stalls, with plenty on offer for the steady stream of customers who came through.

An enormous amount of work went in beforehand with the girls carefully planning their products, designing their stalls, and working out their budgets and pricing ahead of time. On the day, that preparation really showed, with excellent teamwork and great energy at every stall.

A huge congratulations to all the girls involved, and a big thank you to the OLM and De La Salle communities who came along to support them. It was a wonderful day, and the girls should be very proud of what they achieved.

Seventeen Year 10 students returned last week from an unforgettable seven day Red Earth immersion to Cape York, an experience that reshaped their understanding of culture, community and Country.

Beginning in Cairns and travelling north to Guurrill, students were welcomed onto Guugu Yimithirr Country by Traditional Owners Lillian and Richard, whose stories, language and generosity became the heart of the journey. Days were spent exploring Country, learning language names, hiking to the Old Homestead, swimming in creeks and helping at the Hope Vale School athletics carnival — a highlight filled with joy, connection and instant friendships. Evenings around the campfire brought Dreaming stories, damper making and reflection under the brightest night sky many had ever seen. Students were honoured to celebrate Lillian and Richard’s 57th wedding anniversary with traditional dances and heartfelt gratitude.

The immersion continued in Kuranda, where Indigenous rangers taught spear‑throwing, boomerang techniques, bush medicine and Djabugay language. A full day on the Great Barrier Reef aboard the Dreamtime vessel allowed students to learn from cultural educators while snorkelling at Hastings and Saxon Reefs, where they were lucky enough to swim with Green Sea Turtles.

Students returned home with full hearts and a deeper appreciation for culture, Country and community. This was more than a trip, it was a transformative experience that will stay with them long after Year 10.

Why does OLM have a no‑device policy for Year 7?
Because the research is clear:
less tech = better learning.

Recent international studies show that heavy classroom technology use actually lowers academic performance. The OECD found that students who use devices the most at school score lower on reading, maths, and science than those who use them only occasionally.
Another study showed that frequent tablet use can set students back by nearly a full year of learning.

At OLM, we want our Year 7 students to build strong foundations in:
✍️ Writing
📚 Reading
🤝 Social connection
🧠 Independent thinking

Our no device approach helps students stay engaged, reduce distraction, and develop the core skills they need for high school success.

Less screen time. More real learning.
That’s why Year 7 at OLM starts with no devices.

Our student and parent community are warmly invited to attend our Year 7 and 8 Newman Symposium on Monday 29th June 3-4:30.

Students have been working hard to create displays for a symposium (or conference) on the topic ‘moments in time’. We have lots of interactive projects on display which students have developed collaboratively. it will be a lovely afternoon in which parents and friends are welcome to come see the dedicated work of our Newman students
