Why Year 7 Starts With No Devices

A review of 32 studies found that phones, iPads, and laptops in the classroom often distract students and have a negative impact on learning and class participation. The Effects of Mobile Phone Use on Academic Performance: A Meta-Analysis. Educational Psychology Review.

At OLM, this research supports our decision to begin Year 7 with no laptops or personal devices.

By reducing digital distractions, we’re helping students stay engaged, participate fully, and build strong learning habits from the very start of high school.

Earlier this week our Year 12 Hospitality students were busy serving up a storm at Bocca Bocca Restaurant in Caringbah. A huge thank you to the owner, Sam, for providing such a wonderful opportunity for students from OLM and St Aloysius. This special one-night event gave the next generation of hospitality talent a chance to step into the spotlight. Students put their skills to the test, designing and delivering a complete restaurant experience—from the kitchen to the front of house for an audience of the people who matter most: their families and teachers.
