Why Year 7 at OLM Have No Laptops or Phones at School
Phones and laptops increase distraction and reduce attention in class.

Research: The American Psychological Association (2024) reports that students’ divided attention, often caused by digital devices, has negative consequences for learning, leading many educators to call for stricter classroom tech policies.

At OLM, this research supports our decision to begin Year 7 with no laptops or phones.

That’s the OLM approach for Year 7.

It was with absolute pleasure we invited Amber Buckland (class of 2025) back to OLM to present an Empower Lunch on Construction and Project Management. Amber spoke to our current students about her subjects at our school and how they set her up to begin her Project Management traineeship with Mirvac. She explained the difference between a trade apprenticeship, a university cadetship and what she is undertaking with her Cert IV in Project Management Principles traineeship. It was fascinating to learn about.

Amber is loving her work, and described an exciting, large, commercial project she is working on. It is so good to see our graduates excelling in their chosen field, and to be able to share this non-traditional role with our current students. #projectmanagment #olmcburraneer #empowerlunches

Year 7 and 8 students attended the Sydney Writers’ Festival today to listen to 3 different authors writing in 3 different Young Adult genres.

Amy Doak spoke about her crime fiction writing, Josh Silver spoke about mental health in his books and Alexandra Moody spoke about her romance novels.

Students found out about the creative and publishing process and had an opportunity to ask questions in a plenary session. #sydneywritersfestival #olmcburraneer
